Schrader valves are the same style used on most car tires. They’re wider, sturdy, and common on many mountain bikes, kids’ bikes, hybrids, and commuter bikes. Presta valves are slimmer and typically found on road bikes, many higher-end mountain bikes, and performance wheels. They have a small locknut at the tip that you unscrew before inflating; once the pump is removed, you tighten it back down. Presta’s narrow shape fits smaller rim holes, which is useful for lightweight rims, and it can handle high pressures well when properly seated.
Dunlop valves are common on city bikes in parts of Europe and Asia. They look somewhat like Presta but inflate more like Schrader depending on the pump head. They’re less common in the U.S., but if you have one, a pump with a convertible head or a compatible adapter can make inflation easy.
Many modern pumps have a dual head or a reversible gasket that supports both Presta and Schrader. If not, a small screw-on adapter can let a Schrader pump inflate a Presta valve, which is handy for travel or emergencies.
